Handgun Ammunition

  • Buffalo Bore Ammunition 32 S&W Long 115 Grain Hard Cast Flat Nose Box of 20

Buffalo Bore loads their ammunition up to maximum SAAMI specifications, which delivers devastating performance on a wide range of game. Please note that this ammunition is not intended for older guns. It is made for modern firearms only, as some of the ammunition could damage older and weaker firearms. This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.

In order to make this cartridge meaningful for self-defense, Buffalo Bore designed hard cast (not soft) bullets that will not deform on impact and will maintain their flat nose profile as they penetrate through muscle and bone and because of their flat nose, they crush (not slip and slide) through mammalian tissues, doing considerable damage along their path. These bullets are alloyed and lubed properly so they will NOT substantially lead foul any normal barrel. Using modern powders added velocity and remains within the SAAMI pressure limits of 15,000 PSI. The result is a fairly lethal cartridge that brings new usefulness to millions of these old pistols. Depending on how much clothing must be penetrated and how much bone is encountered, expect 20 to 30 inches of straight-line penetration in mammalian tissue with this load.

This ammunition is safe to use in any solid frame revolver that is in ordinary shooting condition. “Solid frame” means any revolver that is not a top break frame. “Ordinary shooting condition”, means a revolver that is in condition to fire any modern factory, 32 S&W LONG ammo, without malfunction. Have a competent gunsmith check your revolver for “ordinary shooting condition” if you have doubts, as many of these revolvers are very old and some imports were made of questionable quality as manufacturing techniques and materials were not advanced ten or so decades ago. To add versatility, this ammunition can, of course, be fired in ANY/ALL revolvers chambered in 32 H&R Magnum and 327 Federal.

Buffalo Bore Heavy ammunition is loaded to be some of the most powerful and highest quality ammunition available in . Buffalo Bore Premium Heavy ammunitions is considered safe to use in any 327 Federal chambered firearm that is in normal operating condition. This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.

Owner of Buffalo Bore Tim Sundles on Buffalo Bore Heavy 327 Federal Ammunition:

Our 100gr. JHP, 327 federal load, is the direct result of customer requests for such a load. It is a Full Power 327 Federal load and utilizes a flash suppressed powder, so the shooter will not be blinded by his own gunfire should the hammer be dropped in a low light situation.

As always, Buffalo Bore uses stock over-the-counter firearms to determine our published velocities, so the shooter will know what to expect in the real world. The industry wide use of extra-long laboratory test barrels, that generate unrealistic and exaggerated velocities, is dishonest to the customer. The below velocities were fired from my personal stock revolvers.

    • 1521 fps — USFA Sparrow Hawk, 7.5 inch barrel
    • 1466 fps — Ruger Black Hawk, 5.5 inch barrel

This ammunition is safe to use in all 357 Magnum chambered firearms with steel frames that are in proper working condition. This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.

Owner of Buffalo Bore Tim Sundles on Buffalo Bore Heavy 357 Magnum Ammunition:

For those wanting/needing a lead-free, HEAVY 357 Magnum load, generating full power plus, here it is.

Below are real world velocities taken from my personal stock guns. The industry established use of long laboratory test barrels that give false high velocity readings is essentially misleading to the public who won’t be firing the ammo from a laboratory test barrel in the real world, where it matters.

    • 2145 fps – Marlin mod 1894, 18 inch barrel
    • 1583 fps – S&W mod 27, 5 inch barrel
    • 1591 fps – S&W Mt. Gun, 4 inch barrel
    • 1507 fps – S&W mod 66, 3 inch barrel
    • 1448 fps – S&W mod 66, 2.5 inch barrel

You’ll notice the newer S&W 4 inch Mt. Gun, gave higher velocities than the older 5 inch mod 27 S&W. This is because of different internal barrel dynamics and chamber dimensions of the newer gun. In general, the newer S&W revolvers are made to tighter tolerances than those of 30+ years ago.

Due to the long-for-weight all copper bullet, the 357 does not have the case capacity to use a bulky flash retarded powder and thus there is a noticeable muzzle flash with this load in all the test revolvers, however the rifle shows no flash at all due to its longer barrel.

This load is the typical barn-burning, turbo charged, Buffalo Bore type HEAVY 357 Mag. load and as such, should only be used in revolvers made of all steel. It should not be fired in light weight, alloy framed or cylindered revolvers. Feel free to use it in ANY/ALL 357 mag. chambered rifles and all steel revolvers/handguns.

Our 357 mag. ammo adds more power than ever before to the 357 mag. This ammo is safe to shoot in ANY all steel 357 revolver – this includes J frames. This ammo is no harder on your gun than any other normal 357 ammo. Please don’t phone us and ask if this ammo is safe in your gun. It is, providing your gun is in safe condition for use with any normal 357 ammo.

We don’t recommend this ammo to be fired in super light alloy revolvers as bullets may jump crimp under recoil, but the ammo itself wont hurt these super light weight revolvers. These revolvers are simply so light that the recoil is severe enough to cause crimp jump.

The below velocities are offered so that you can see what guns/barrel lengths give what velocities with this new 357 mag. ammo. You’ll notice that new S&W revolvers with short barrels are often shooting faster than older S&W revolvers with longer barrels. The new S&W revolvers are very good and are made with equipment that makes them more consistent and faster than the S&W revolvers of yesteryear.

If a shooter is recoil sensitive it is not recommended that this ammunition be fired from revolvers weighing less than 16 oz., due to the amount of recoil generated.

Owner of Buffalo Bore Tim Sundles on Buffalo Bore Tactical Short Barrel 357 Magnum Ammunition:

Typical full power 357 magnum loads offer several tactical problems for use in self-defense and duty applications, especially when used in the shorter/lighter revolvers that are typical of concealed, defensive and duty carry. First, the muzzle flash can be blinding, especially from short barrels. Second, felt recoil can be a life-threatening drawback if fast follow-up shots are required. Third, the level of report can be deafening and cause permanent hearing loss, especially if fired indoors.

All three Buffalo Bore Tactical Short Barrel loads address the above problems and make the 357 magnum ideal for concealed, defensive and duty carry in smaller revolvers.

Muzzle flash: These exciting new 357 magnum loads utilize a flash suppressed powder that will not blind you, should you need to drop the hammer in a low light situation. It is estimated that over 90% of all defensive civilian shootings in the U.S. happen in low light-that is when the criminal element is at work. Wouldn’t it be horrible if you fired at an assailant, in the dark, to protect your family, only to find that you missed the bad guy and you are now blind due to your own muzzle flash? This is a scenario that has happened many times in the real world with the 357 magnum. Through the use of our non-canister, flash suppressed powder, the tactical problem of blinding muzzle flash is now greatly reduced with Buffalo Bore’s new Tactical Short Barrel loads!

Recoil: Felt recoil is exacerbated by the use of shorter barreled, smaller framed, lighter weight 357 revolvers, typically used for concealed and duty carry. The new Buffalo Bore Tactical Short Barrel 357 loads are not the normal full power “barn burner”, 357 magnum loads we make and as such, felt recoil is substantially reduced, although they remain very powerful. Hence, deadly, and faster follow-up shots are more possible.

Your ears: Most folks don’t think of the level of “report” as being a problem during a life threatening/defensive shooting and that may be correct for the actual moment of conflict. However, to lose some of your hearing for the rest of your life, following the shooting incident, is unnecessary and undesirable. Full power 357 magnum ammunition is deafening, even more so when fired from short barrels and even worse if you are required to shoot from an enclosed area such as a vehicle or indoors. Buffalo Bore’s Tactical Short Barrel 357 magnum loads are not as hard on your hearing as full power ammunition. Although the use of hearing protection is still desirable, if possible, when using this ammo.

For those who wish to carry a 357 magnum revolver for potential “conflict resolution”, these new Buffalo Bore loads put an end to the “tactical” draw backs associated with our regular 357 magnum ammo. These loads are great for use in longer barreled firearms too.

We could have reduced the recoil, flash and blast even more by “watering down” these loads further than we did, but then you wouldn’t have a real 357 magnum in your hands. So we looked for and found a balance between very powerful, fight stopping ammo that recoils and flashes much less than ours and some other makers, full power 357 loads. If we were to “water down” this “Tactical Short Barrel” 357 ammo any more, we would simply not manufacture it and suggest that you use our 38 SPL+P ammunition.

None of these loads caused crimp/bullet jump (in five shots) in my 12 OZ. Scandium S&W Model 340, but they did generate considerable felt recoil.

This load is the result of popular demand. Many folks who hunt deer and medium sized hogs/black bear want an expanding bullet that is heavier than our 158 gr. JHP load. We are utilizing the excellent Hornady XTP bullet and we very much like its accuracy and controlled expansion design. This bullet does expand, so do not expect several feet of straight line penetration like you’ll get with our non-expanding hard cast 180 gr. load. (Item 19A)  When impacting flesh and bone at normal 6-inch revolver speeds, (1500 fps) this bullet will expand readily to about 60 caliber and penetrate about 18-25 inches depending on which bones are struck and the exact impact speed.

We don’t recommend this ammo to be fired in super light alloy revolvers as bullets may jump crimp under recoil, but the ammo itself wont hurt these super light weight revolvers. These revolvers are simply so light that the recoil is severe enough to cause crimp jump.

Owner of Buffalo Bore Tim Sundles on Buffalo Bore Heavy 357 Magnum Ammunition:

For those wanting the deep-for-weight penetration of the all copper (lead free) Barnes XPB 125gr. bullet in a ?tactical? loading, here it is. We use low flash powder so the shooter will not be blinded by his own gunfire, as nearly all self defense shootings in America occur in low light when the criminal element is out and about.

Our tactical 357 mag. ammo generates less felt recoil and blast (flash and noise) than our Heavy 357 mag. loads and as such is a better choice for those carrying light weight short barreled revolvers. This is still a full powered 357 mag. load, but allows for faster follow-up shots and greater shooting comfort.

Below are real world velocities taken from my personal real world stock guns. The established use of long laboratory test barrels that give false high velocity readings are essentially misleading to the public who won’t be firing ammo from laboratory test barrels.

    • 1295 fps – S&W mod 66, 3 inch barrel
    • 1235 fps – S&W mod 66, 2.5 inch barrel

Yes the more modern 4-inch S&W Mt. gun did shoot faster velocities than the older 5-inch model 27 and this is due to different internal barrel dynamics of the newer gun.

  • Buffalo Bore Ammunition 357 Magnum Short Barrel 140 Grain Barnes TAC-XP Hollow Point Low Flash Lead-Free Box of 20

For those wanting the deep-for-weight penetration of the all copper (lead free) Barnes XPB 140gr. bullet in a Tactical loading, here it is. We use low flash powder so the shooter will not be blinded by his own gunfire, as nearly all self defense shootings in America occur in low light when the criminal element is out and about.

Expect roughly 22+ inches of penetration in flesh and bone and a mushroom of roughly 55 caliber, with this load. These figures vary with differing impact velocities and amount of bone or heavy clothing encountered.

Our Tactical 357 mag. ammo generates less felt recoil and blast (flash and noise) than our Heavy 357 mag. load and as such is a better choice for those carrying light weight short barreled revolvers. This is still a full power 357 mag. load, (but not nearly as powerful as our Heavy 357 mag. ammunition)but allows for faster follow-up shots and greater shooting comfort.

This load is safe to use in any/all 357 mag. chambered firearms, as are all of our Tactical 357 mag. loads even those with light weight alloy cylinders and frames.

As always, Buffalo Bore refuses to get involved with the industry wide duplicitous practice of using extra long laboratory barrels to generate our published velocities. Doing so is dishonest to the customer as he/she will never be able to generate such velocities with real world firearms, in the real world, where it matters. Please note our real world velocities, fired from real world firearms:

    • 1401 fps — Marlin 1894, 18 inch
    • 1225 fps — S&W Mod 27, 5 inch
    • 1246 fps — S&W MT. Gun, 4 inch
    • 1199 fps — S&W Mod 66, 3 inch
    • 1149 fps — S&W Mod 66, 2.5 inch

You’ll note that the more modern 4 inch S&W shoots faster velocities than the older 5 inch S&W. This is not a typo and is due to differing internal barrel dynamics of the two revolvers. GENREALLY speaking, newer S&W revolvers generate faster velocities than the older S&W’s, although we occasionally see an older S&W that shoots faster than a new one. Truth is that each firearm, no matter who made it or what model or date of manufacture, is a law unto itself.

This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.

Owner of Buffalo Bore Tim Sundles on Buffalo Bore Heavy 357 Sig Low Flash Ammunition:

Because you requested it, Buffalo Bore is now producing two full power 357 Sig. loads. These loads are full power 357 Sig. Not the watered down stuff that other factories are already producing. Why is it that a new cartridge gets developed with touted ballistics in the media, only to have the ammo manufacturers “water” it down after a few years on the market? (The same thing happened with the original 10MM) The 357 Sig. was designed to blast a 125gr. bullet at 1,425 FPS out of a four inch carry gun barrel. (Not a much longer test barrel) So, that is what both our loadings do.

We use flash suppressed powder so that you wont be blinded by your own gun fire should you be required to drop the hammer in low light. Since over 90% of shootings in America happen in low light, flash suppressed ammunition is a huge tactical advantage.

Item 25A utilizes the 125gr. Jacketed Hollow Point bullet. It is designed to open radically and penetrate roughly 12 to 14 inches in tissue. Note my velocities from my real world pistol, (not a test barrel) below.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE HEADSTAMP ON THIS BRASS: Due to limited supplies of brass, Buffalo Bore has begun loading +P and +P+ ammunition in brass that may not be indicated as such on the headstamp. Example: 9mm Luger +P+ ammunition may be designated as 9mm Luger +P or simply 9mm Luger on the headstamp.

This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.

Owner of Buffalo Bore Tim Sundles on Buffalo Bore Heavy 38 Special +P Ammunition:

For those wanting a deep penetrating all copper expanding 38SPL+P load, this is it. Depending on individual impact velocity, (barrel lengths and distance to target vary) you can expect between 12 to 14 inches of penetration.

Buffalo Bore was able to engineer a flash suppressed powder for this load and therefore the shooter will not be blinded by his own gun fire in low light. This creates a huge tactical advantage as most civilian shootings in the US occur in low light when the criminal element is out and about.

See the below real world velocities fired from real world revolvers, not extra long laboratory test barrels that give false extra high velocities, that cannot be duplicated in real life. With Buffalo Bore Ammunition, you’ll always get real world, useable velocities.

    • 1438 fps — Ruger GP 100, 6 inch barrel
    • 1287 fps — S&W Model 15, 4 inch barrel
    • 1210 fps — S&W Model 66, 3 inch barrel
    • 1202 fps — Ruger SP101, 3 inch barrel
    • 1149 fps — S&W Model 66, 2.5 inch barrel
    • 1119 fps — S&W Model 60, 2 inch barrel
    • 1104 fps — S&W Model 340, 2 inch barrel

This load is safe to fire from all 38SPL +P rated and all/any 357 firearms that are in normal operating condition. However, when fired from super light weight alloy J frame revolvers, recoil is stiff. This cartridge is designed so the bullet will not jump crimp when subjected to recoil from firing in super light 12 OZ revolvers, provided you do not subject any cartridge to the recoil of more than six or seven firings.

With great pleasure, we noted that every test gun delivered tiny little groups at 25 yards. It is normal when we observe good accuracy from most test guns and exceptional accuracy from some test guns with any load we are developing, but this load gave exceptional accuracy from every test gun. Most of our adjustable sighted test guns, needed the rear sight raised as this high speed, light weight bullet shot to a lower point of impact than normal loads our guns were already sighted in for, but the groups (accuracy potential) were very small, none-the-less.

Owner of Buffalo Bore Tim Sundles on Buffalo Bore Heavy 38 Special +P Ammunition:

The new Buffalo Bore Heavy 38 SPL+P ammo will maximize the effectiveness of your 38 SPL revolver. The powders are flash suppressed so as to not hinder your vision should you be required to drop the hammer in low light.

Item 20B/20 uses the low velocity (LV) Jacketed Hollow Point bullet that is designed to expand at as little as 800 fps, so you will get expansion out of very short barrels.

Whether you prefer the very soft semi wadcutter lead bullet, or a very soft JHC, (jacketed hollow cavity) these HVY 38 SPL+p loads will turbo charge your 38 SPL revolver.

The tactical reload: Short (2 to 2.5 inch) barreled revolvers have short ejectors. Those short ejectors typically used on 2 inch to 2.5 inch barreled revolvers are not long enough to fully eject 357 magnum brass. So if you are forced into a situation where you need to reload your weapon under fire, you will find yourself picking your fired/empty 357 brass out of the cylinder one at a time – this is very bad. On the other hand, 38SPL brass is shorter than 357 brass and those short ejectors will often fully eject 38SPL brass. We have experimented a great deal with short barreled revolvers and have found that 38SPL brass normally offers an advantage if you need to reload your “snub nose” revolver, in a hurry.

Check out the below velocities that I fired from my personal revolvers. We believe that real world, stock, “over the counter” guns, give real world results, so we don’t advertise velocities that are fired from long test barrels.

These 38SPL+P loads are generating low-end 357 magnum, ballistics. If you have an older or more fragile 38SPL, or if you are recoil sensitive, consider using our HVY Standard Pressure 38SPL ammunition. It is safe to be fired in any 38SPL revolver and it still packs much more punch than ordinary 38SPL ammo.

Item 20B: 125gr. Jacketed Hollow Point. This is the Low velocity version designed to expand under 800 fps. It will mushroom violently and penetrate roughly 12 inches.
